43rd: The Practice of Haruhi Suzumiya

Alright, I'm back! We'll be moving on to new and better things soon, because I've decided on how we're going to ring out spring! Details in the next meeting, so be sure all of you are at it, even if meetings have been a little lax lately. Failure to be there will be met with punishment!

Oh-! Right! All of you met our new members [Diamond, Pearl, Twilight, Usagi] by now, right? If you somehow didn't, get on that! After all, I'm going to promote one of my Brigade members to Deputy-Vice-Chief sometime soon, and there's no way you'll be in the running unless you're on the ball.

[And with that out of the way, Haruhi Suzumiya is back in the village proper. It's only been a little more than a week since she started her "camp all over the place to try to hook up with more filial spirits" plan, but she's already started to hear more than she did before. Sona was still blocking her, but now she thinks she's been hearing more from Tsinku and Kipinn (finally) is something she's been starting to work with magically. So now she's back in town and decides--

You know what, it's warmer out after that cold snap and it's not raining. So she's going to just spend the whole day outside. She considers a Flower Viewing, but that's no good solo. Instead, she goes back to House 10 to dig through it until she finds her guitar and then goes to sit down on the edge of the fountain with it. She practiced a lot with it last year, but she hasn't in a while--

But after some messing around, it's not perfect, but she might be playing this or this as well as she can from memory, and after that she just starts to do random things which come to mind. She's surprised how well she can remember, and wonders a little why she stopped in the first place. This is sort of fun]

[ Killua's listening from a nearby tree. Sitting on a branch, he swings his feet back and forth before letting himself fall a bit, using his legs to support himself on the tree ]

You still need practice.

[She finishes the last note and then opens her eyes to turn and glare in the direction of the voice- oh. Her eyes open a bit wider, but she reigns it in]

Haaah?

You're not bad, but you could be better. [ shruuug. he swings from the tree a bit ]

Since when are you a musical genius?

[With an eyebrow arch and a very flat look]

You don't have to be a musical genius to know if something sounds good or not. [ snerk ]

-And it didn't sound that bad either, you brat! [Wait that wouldn't be the right way to put it oops]

Isn't that what I said? [ it was a compliment from him, okay... ]

No!

[And then a sigh-] But whatever, it's fine. I know it's not my best work.

It's better than others I've heard.

-Of course it was! It's not like anyone can just pick up a guitar and play it well, you know. [...Except Yuki but she digresses]

It wouldn't be impossible to do that.

What, so can you do that?

Nope. Not interested, anyways. There's probably people in my world who could pull that off, though.

What, is everyone in your world a weirdly talented preteen or something?

Didn't I ever tell you about hunters?

Maybe. [Actually, she's running through her memories. It's a long, long time ago and a trip home between it, even. "Hunters" came up, but at the time she had always focused on the "assassin" part, because that somehow seemed more extreme, more shocking]

But I don't really remember.

[ Killua gets that almost right away ] But, you remembered everything else I told you?

As much as anyone remembers things from almost four years ago. Who remembers inane details of basic conversations?

It's going to be weird not being the newest member any longer.

Of course! You've graduated, and might even have a shot at deputy vice chief!

[ She's not sure she has the creativity for it, if she's being honest. ]

Neither was Azusa, back when she was promoted! Show some initiative!

[Rosemary is trying to find the nearest store when she hears the guitar and turns to see who's playing it.]

Hey, that's pretty good!

[And she strums a last chord, stops, opened her eyes, and grins over at the younger girl. In spite of herself, she's pleased to hear it, buuut, ego calls-]

Well, naturally. I'm pretty talented after all.

I wish I was that good.

I'm Rosemary Applefield. What's your name?

[Wow friendly] I'm Haruhi -- Haruhi Suzumiya. [Tapping her guitar lightly in lieu of any sort of polite bow, that is]

So, Miss Suzumiya, is there a certain position or job you hold here in this village?

Where's that come from?

[Adopting a flat look in no time flat]

I was just wondering whether you were a professional musician or something along those lines. You certainly have the talent.

Haaah? No, of course not! I just picked this up on a whim! [Somewhat flushed, she waves a hand dismissively to try to pass that off]

Oh, OK! Sorry. What do you do for a career then? I'm still trying to find one of my own.

Car-- Who does a career in Luceti, come on! I'm the leader of the SOS-Brigade, but it's not like that's a career.

[That would be stuffy and status quo!]

So it's true. There really are no paying jobs in this city.

What does a leader of the SOS-Brigade do?

She leads the infamous SOS-Brigade, of course! We're even in the guide and our HQ is right there - [Nodding in the direction of the sign with the symbol on it] So it's not like you can miss it.

[Leon's in the process of lugging along a few things from the item store when he hears the guitar playing over from the plaza. He'd noticed the journal announcement from Haruhi earlier, so he isn't too surprised to see her back in the village; he just wasn't expecting to run into her so soon.

He'll just wait patiently over here until she's not strumming the guitar to greet her.]

Welcome back.

Yeah, I'm back. [With a little nod. She says it warm enough, even with a little smile, but then turns her attention to the items in his hands before turning back to the strings on the guitar. She's no tuning person per se, but...]

[He tilts his head when he sees her attention go back to the guitar.]

Been awhile since you played, huh? Sounding a little off?

Yeah, a few months, at least. I picked it up on a whim a little over a year ago, but since then it's not like I've dedicated my life to it or anything...

You're good for only having played it for a year. [If even that, by Haruhi's description.] Do you have a tuner for your guitar?

If you mean some item for it, there's probably something for it in the house. No idea where it is, though.

Well, there's tuning forks or electronic tuners, but I'm usually tuning my violin to the school piano. [He makes a vague motion over to the schoolhouse.] It sounded okay when you were playing, though. ...Not that I know the songs. [Maybe. Did they have Rocky around to watch?]

[Maybe at the Rec Center or something...]

Yeah? Maybe I just forgot more than I thought. It just doesn't sound quite right to me.

...Huh. [He tilts his head a little at Haruhi's insistence.]

Maybe I came in a little late. Do you mind playing it again?

Oh, sure.

[A light inhale. She taps the guitar a few times, and then closes her eyes before getting back into it]

[This time, he pays closer attention to how the guitar sounds. There's a twitch to his brow as he listens to the repeated twang of one string in particular.]

You're right. Something sounds a little off.

Can you hear where the problem is, with those ears?

[He moves closer so he can look at the strings on Haruhi's guitar. The strings followed the same pattern as his violin strings, though there were of course two more on the guitar. He points at the third-thinnest string.]

It looks like your G string is too loose. You're a bit flat.

Oh yeah? [And she twangs it - this time, it does seem pretty... yeah, okay, she can see what he means. She considers it, not sure if she should try to tighten it herself or not]

Yeah. The others sound fairly in tune, but that one in particular sounds bad. [He can see that she's debating what to do.] If you're not busy to take care of it, it's not like the school's that far at all.

Nope, not too busy at all! [And she swings her legs before leaping to her feet. Guitar in hand, she turns to head towards the school without missing a beat]

[He grins despite himself, trotting right alongside her.]

So how was the whole "attuning to nature" thing?

[She waves a hand, causing a light (very light) breeze to ruffle Leon's hair] I finally got that hyperactive guy to teach me a thing or two, and I heard the lightning one.

[His ears flick automatically as the wind stirs the fine hairs of his ears, and he glances over at Haruhi's hand before making the connection.]

Heard it? ...Oh, I guess a week wouldn't be enough to make good progress with Tsinku.

At least he's more cooperative than Sona. I can hear her just long enough for her to be a snob.

[As they reach the front of the school, Leon pulls open the door and holds it for Haruhi.]

...Yeah. She's kinda off-putting, and I say that as someone with an ice and water affinity.

[Good man] She's stupidly difficult.

[He follows Haruhi inside, already heading for the music room.]

You would think she would like people paying attention to her.

She's clearly one of those people who thinks they're better than people so she doesn't need them. It's the worst type.

At least she'll respond, even if it's to not be helpful. When I was reaching out to Hyt, it took over a week just to hear a peep out of it.

I still haven't really heard Hyt. Honestly, Faeren's radio silent too.

[Faeren is also afraid of her]

Complete silence. It's pretty hard to maintain around the village, especially during the daytime. At least when you do eventually hear them, you're not wondering if you just hallucinated it.

[He could be patient. Really. But meditation wasn't his kind of thing.]

Hyt's easier at night? [Or did he mean Faeren?]

[He shakes his head, glancing over to the sign on the wall as they approach the music room.] No, I'm just saying Hyt's hard to hear because it's so quiet and the only time to hear it is during daytime, when everything's making noise. Faeren's similar, but not that bad.

Hyt seems like they would be meticulous enough to to appreciate someone sitting up and watching the sunrise, but then I don't know a lot.

Maybe. I haven't tried that one. [Because waking up to watch the sunrise... Yeah, that's not exactly something he does much of.] The others are comparatively easier, even if Sona's cold and Kipinn can be a little annoying.

I thought Kipinn was cute.

[Shows what you know, Leon. God. Anyway, open the music room for her so we can tune this]

He's hyperactive. [There's something of a whine to his voice as he holds the door open for Haruhi. Is that what Haruhi considered cute?]

But it's hard not to think of him as being some ten year old or something.

[So he's cute in that respect.

I guess. But not a lot of people like learning from ten year olds.

[...He should know.]

Yeah, but he doesn't lord over you or anything. [She waves a hand dismissively. She imagines it's a little like Yoda or something]

True. That's all Sona.

[The music room still has its grand piano, which is where Leon heads over to. He opens up the cover of the keys, brushing his fingers over the long keys while glancing at Haruhi.]

Shouldn't be too difficult to tune that one string.

You want the guitar?

[To handle it solo?! Or should they do the group thing. That is the question]

[He waves his hands out in the negative, grinning at Haruhi.]

You're the one playing the guitar here. I just play the violin. ["Just."]

Alright, if you say so. [And with that, the strumming on the string begins. Strum...]
