48th: The Officiousness of Haruhi Suzumiya

[Action ]

[ Kyon went home. Kyon went home and the world didn't even notice. Which in some ways is not surprising - he went home just as they were going to Malnosso World. Oh sure the Brigade in Luceti probably noticed as the (increasingly infrequent or at least shorter due to the small size) meetings had him absent where he never really was before but for the most part? Who cared?

Well, Haruhi did.

And because of Haruhi caring around that, she threw herself hard into studying again. In Malnosso World she could work on making progress with her Extended Brigade but in the first week back she signed up for all sorts of missions to not get accepted to any. And so... she studied. Magic, technology, history, cryptoids, anything she could do apart from people because she didn't want to deal with people. Which is why apart from jogging in the morning, going to the Brigade HQ for meetings, and going home at night (maybe a snack between) much of Haruhi's time was in the library and she looks increasingly frumpy. As in she hasn't slept great and her hair has been better. You can encounter her doing this, or you might encounter her practicing some sigils, or meditating for spirits as the weeks drag on... but eventually:]

A lot of people have shown themselves to be sort of stupid here before now, but does anyone have some interesting facts or stories to tell me? I want to know more about whatever you want to tell me about. And if you don't, someone come to the HQ and help me test out some things. I've been working on some spells or ways to work with the Filial Spirits. So come on, Luceti.

[ She may or may not be a little distant sounding, but she is interested ]

[ She mutters " strange" to herself briefly for no real reason before she agrees. Raine has a fair enough point and as such she sits up to go and go out with her, dusting off her clothes out of habit and then sighing]

You're probably right.

[Rather than push the point of knowing that she is right, she waits for Haruhi to ready herself.]

Did you bring a coat with you?

I... don't think so.

[ a beat and] No I didn't.

... well, I guess it's not that cold, yet. [She won't freeze on a quick walk across the square, and maybe the cool air would get some sense into her yet.] Still, let's get going.

No, it isn't. [But it is ... cold. Cold enough that as they make their way out it is does stand out to her and makes her shiver a little. She's gotten more used to it but she still didn't grow up with this much cold this time of year. ]

[All the more reason to pick up the pace a bit.] You okay there?

Yeah, I'm fine.

[ Just... maybe shivering a little before she steels herself to truck it ]

All right. It won't be long.

[ :T Let's hurry because this is making her realize it's cold ]

[It'll take a few more minutes to cross the plaza, as Raine guides Haruhi toward the stairs of the tea shop.] Here we are. Let's get inside.

[ Oh, this place. She frowns briefly, but shakes that off, just grateful to be warm again and deciding to focus on that over the minor emotional discomfort she feels about the whole "this is a place Kyon frequented, isn't it?" thing. because that's just silly]

[She'll just lead her towards one of the tables near the back wall, away from any possible draft from the door.] Just make yourself comfortable. I know Sheena keeps some hot rolls here, but I can see if I can get something more filling as well.

Sheena... huh. [ She should know her better, shouldn't she? She's heard the name for years and seen her around. She wonders if Kyon knew her. ... Well, whatever. Either way, she obediently (relatively) sits. And she'll wait, for now, drumming a finger without really noticing she's doing it ]

Hm? [She seems on edge... but that could just be the apparent lack of sleep or lack of food that she's had.]

[Trying to recall what she had drank in that... alternate world, though some details were getting difficult to recall.] You prefer green, don't you?

Yeah. Green and oolong are both fine. [ Green's better though - just simple and ... really, as long as there's skill in how you make it aren't simple things best?

Or maybe she just doesn't think about tea despite liking it.

All right. I'll go order. [That way she can just put in the request for food and hopefully Sheena wouldn't mind.]

[ And Haruhi for her part... falls into a pensive mood. Which is subtly different than the obsessive studying for the sake of it, inquisitively, she's been giving into the last while. Now she thinks about how small the Brigade is now or how Kyon is back at north high, or how she would be in college now, probably.

And drums her finger slowly as she does it ]

[And she steps back to the table only to see her drumming, again.]

... It doesn't seem that dragging you out here has helped much either.

[a beat and then Haruhi looks back up at Raine, catching herself ]

No, it's for the best. I could use a better snack, at least.

It should be ready shortly, anyway. [She pulls her chair back out again, and sits. How to do this without prying, exactly?] You've seemed... very invested in research lately. More than usual.

Yeah, I guess I have been. [ She ends up rubbing one of her arms. And then sighs. At least she stopped drumming ] Everything been just a little more curious since we got back from the moon.

Hm... I know there's been a fear shift of sorts affecting a few residents, but this is the first I've heard of curiosity being a part of it. Unless you're just trying to distract yourself.

... Jeez.

[ You know what she is leaning her face into her palm here. There we go ] Yeah, maybe a little. The Brigade's so small it's not like there's much to do with meetings.

That's fair enough... but it seemed like you were going overboard.

Mmm - like I said, maybe.

[ Realistically, she knows it's a bit like when Winry broke up with her-- no it's worse, this time, because that time she at least had a goal. This time she's just been aimlessly asking question after question.]
