godbent | 48th: The Officiousness of Haruhi Suzumiya

[Action ]

[ Kyon went home. Kyon went home and the world didn't even notice. Which in some ways is not surprising - he went home just as they were going to Malnosso World. Oh sure the Brigade in Luceti probably noticed as the (increasingly infrequent or at least shorter due to the small size) meetings had him absent where he never really was before but for the most part? Who cared?

Well, Haruhi did.

And because of Haruhi caring around that, she threw herself hard into studying again. In Malnosso World she could work on making progress with her Extended Brigade but in the first week back she signed up for all sorts of missions to not get accepted to any. And so... she studied. Magic, technology, history, cryptoids, anything she could do apart from people because she didn't want to deal with people. Which is why apart from jogging in the morning, going to the Brigade HQ for meetings, and going home at night (maybe a snack between) much of Haruhi's time was in the library and she looks increasingly frumpy. As in she hasn't slept great and her hair has been better. You can encounter her doing this, or you might encounter her practicing some sigils, or meditating for spirits as the weeks drag on... but eventually:]

A lot of people have shown themselves to be sort of stupid here before now, but does anyone have some interesting facts or stories to tell me? I want to know more about whatever you want to tell me about. And if you don't, someone come to the HQ and help me test out some things. I've been working on some spells or ways to work with the Filial Spirits. So come on, Luceti.

[ She may or may not be a little distant sounding, but she is interested ]

[She shrugs a little.] They're animals. But it's still a novelty compared to other humans. One that wears off once you're used to it.

Honestly, outside of Sekai, I barely notice it anymore.

[... Which is sort of weird in and of itself ]

[She nods, as that pretty much illustrated her point.] Now, if a shift were to happen where none of us would be able to communicate with one another... it would likely take quite a few residents off guard, given how used we all are to the translation.

I might work out pretty okay - there's a lot of Japanese people. [ She nods to herself ] I can tell who's speaking Japanese when I hear it. I think.

Well, with a shift, our languages might get altered to something else entirely.

Strange... yeah, that's true.

[ And she makes to devour more curry for a moment, falling silent ]

[She shakes her head with a small smile before taking a few more bites herself.] I understand what you mean, though. It must be a comfort in knowing that under normal circumstances--for your own world--you'd still be able to have conversations.

So can you hear the difference too? I don't think a lot of people can.

[ And she's not entirely sure if it's unique to her, if she's imagining it... really, both are possible. Possibly at the same time, given her powers ]

Not many people would think to look -- or in this case, listen -- for it. The translations are something of a comfort, after all.

Well yeah, but can you hear it?

[She shrugs a little.] I don't try to listen for it, though every now and again I can tell there's a difference. The way certain - accents carry over?

Accents, huh... You know that's a good point. I should try to listen for if people sound more kansai or not.

Have you noticed a large difference in your trips outside the barrier as well?

[ Hmmmm.... ] Not really... it's similar to here, but I guess there's more nuances out there, because there's more worlds represented out there.

Yes, that makes sense. I suppose we could always ask them just how varied their worlds are, if we have a peaceful moment.

A lot of the people I recruited int my extended Brigade so far have been from some version of Earth now I think of it.

It doesn't surprise me that Earth seems to have the most representation so far. [... And then there was the 'fan club' she had encountered at the amusement park.] Although I wish we had a better idea of just how large this world is.

Couldn't anyone with a good grasp of spacial information have picked it up from that one vomit-comet-y ride back on the moon? There was a window.

[ She's a normal human though so. ]

Hm... I didn't go on the ride myself, but I haven't heard anyone mention their perceptions of it either.

I went on it. But I couldn't make out anything, it was going so fast.

Then for now, that still remains a mystery.

Yeah, it does. [ She frowns though, and now holds back asking a million questions by shoveling rice into her mouth ]

[...Hm. Well, she is eating, which was pretty much the reason Raine had dragged her out there. And it's better to eat rice while it's still warm, so she focuses on her own food for a bit in that silence.]

[ The silence was comfortable for a moment, but after keeping up for a spell (she was hungry ) she thus has to give in to the curiosity again ]

Strange...

[ She thus begins to sniff her curry, to try to determine every ingredient]

Hm...?

[She glances back over at her, at first confused, though a slight frown touches her lips. That odd look in her eyes.] What's wrong?
