10th: The Advances of Haruhi Suzumiya
[Voice // Filtered to the SOS-Brigade // 85% Unhackable]
[This morning finds Haruhi sitting on her porch (of House 10) holding a set of dice in her hand before school. She found them last night, and it helped spawn an idea in her head. She's rolling the dice idly on the ground, so anyone is of course free to run into her before then, but-]
Alright Brigade, listen up! In my infinite wisdom I've devised our next scheme. Some people might have been saying "SOS-Brigade, what do they do?" for a while now, and we've been losing a few members here and there besides, but no more! In fact, this new one's going to hit everyone clear out of the park and top everything we've ever done before!
You notice how everyone has been going "oh it's so boring" or "what do you do for fun" and stuff like that? Well, we're going to show them what we do for fun: the SOS-Brigade is going to construct a games house, a gambling den, a casino! Pachinko, slots, poker, blackjack, roulette, craps, showgirls, minibars, we're going to set all of that up and have it operational before the summer begins!
Any objections can be submitted to me once opening night for our new casino happens. In the meantime, we'll be hammering out the details at today's meeting. It's about time we made our name immortal!
[The meeting is assumed, but any insights you think your character might point out/that you want to point out you can show us all here, please]
[Voice // Action]
Hey Luceti! This is your special chance to do a favor for the one and only SOS-Brigade. We're in need of all of the following, so any takers should step forth now! We require: A skilled martial artist, a mathematician, a mechanic who doesn't already work at the smithy, some big meat head - preferably six or more feet tall, a representative from the bar, someone who can fly, someone skilled at hair-care, a skilled massager, a geneticist, anyone who can walk on water and... a hacker, preferably a space-age one.
[Also if you want to find for for action, this evening sees Haruhi going out to outside of House 10 where she's set up some dummies and practicing her martial arts on them. She's good, but she feels sorely out of practice - her muscles aren't keeping up with her brain, and the results are frustrating]

[ voice ]
From the bar, huh? Amongst all those other types? Dare I even ask, Haruhi?
[ though she fit a few others as well. martial artist. hair-care. but those weren't really as official a responsibility in the village as her duty to good spirits is. ]
[ voice ]
[ voice ]
[ 'cause she's got your teacher on speed-dial. figuratively speaking. ]
[ voice ]

[ voice ]
Well? I wasn't thinking it then but I kinda am now.

The years are kinda tricky in a place where time doesn't seem to make all that much of a difference -- it's hard to know if something was bottled here or came through on some kind of dimensional flotsam like some of the stuff in the stores. [ what she really wants to be doing is QUIZZING HARUHI about why winry might have been pregnant -- but no. she'll wait and talk to the not crazy one. ] And when'll you need this by?
[ voice ]
[ voice ]
[ voice ]
We'll stockpile them in the HQ's back room for now.
[ voice ]
[ she's being not-a-prat for once. for a variety of reasons. like being a good spokesperson for the bar. like for winry's sake. like because it's hard to find that perpetual bad-mood place when she's still remembering her tree-top date with a pirate...the kind of gesture that steals breath and blows minds. ]
[ voice ]
[In a way... she's surprised. But she's not about to blow it either, she exhales lightly, and then nods to herself]
Yeah, I'll get back to you if I think of anything.
[ voice ]
[ voice ]
[Do you have anything else to add is vaguely implied here]
[ voice ]
[ now the awkwardness set in. now that the business was done. ] I'll -- I guess I'll talk to you later, then.
[ voice ]
[And she does the mercy of shutting the book first]
no subject
Nevermind that, where're we going to put it all. Isn't your place already loaded?
((Just setting it up, yeah?))
no subject
...Huh. We'll figure out a location for later. Maybe one of the empty houses.
no subject
Want me to go look? I'm... kinda free now. And it'll give me some time with my music too
no subject
no subject
[[So, she's gone for a while. Here's her calling you out a bit later.]]
Hey, Haruhi. I found a couple of empty houses. There's one with a big living room. That'd work, right?
no subject
no subject
no subject
All untaken?
no subject
no subject
no subject
But, you're the one who needs it, right? [[SHOCKED!]]
no subject
no subject
uhm...
[[Considering]]
It... is pretty boring just... living all alone.
If I move, can we get a few of the guys to help move my stuff?
no subject
no subject
Guess I'll start packing up.
no subject
no subject
Oh, and I kind of know a lady who can fly, but, she uses like, wind magic and stuff to do it. She's been teaching others too. She's REALLY hard to miss, if you wanna talk to her.

Isn't a casino pointless when there's no money?

[voice]
[voice]
[voice]
[there's evidently no point arguing against her.] So what do you need me to do?
[voice]
[voice]
I can cook.
[voice]
Well you're a guy, so I guess I can use you for manual labor.
[voice]
[though he was expecting that honestly.]
[voice]

[voice]
Well, Eu resurrected me. She's a Necromancer... Her magic keeps me from dying and injuries heal pretty fast. I'm also stronger because normally people's brains limit their strength to keep them from injuring themselves, but since I'm dead that doesn't matter anymore.

[voice]
[....] Are you going to be one of the showgirls?
1/2
[voice]
I am the one managing this project and the Chief of the Brigade, it's only natural that I be the owner of the establishment, and as such run the floor. If I'm feeling benevolent I might be a dealer for a while too.

He's also totally boss at hair care.]Oh! Pick me, pick me!
[Voice]
[Voice]
[Voice]
But you have to sprint, right?
[Voice]
[Voice]
[Voice]
[Voice]
And if you fall in you can just swim, right- or well, actually, if you're that light you'd probably float.
[Voice]
[He sounds so cheerful about it too. NOT THAT HE WANTS TO DROWN OR ANYTHING. Just how the story goes.]
[Voice]
What-?
[Voice]
...ah, but then again, I'm already dead. Yohohoho!
[Voice]
[Voice] 1/2
[Voice]
[People always seem to infer that with their talk of the undead.]
[Voice]
[Voice]
[Voice]
[Voice] 1/2
[Voice]
That sounds scary!
1/2
[Voice]
[Voice]
[Voice]
[voice]
And what do you need a geneticist and hacker for?
[voice]
-Either way! I'll be counting on you to get the machines up and running, Leon.
[voice]
It has to be a tiger? [...This would probably make more sense if he knew who Siegfried and Roy were.] I'm afraid to ask what network you're referring to.
[voice]
[But there's a pause here, and then a little flicker before she snorts and nods]
So you can handle those - slots, that type of thing?
[voice]
[And he'll pop over to the Brigade HQ via teleporter in a little bit, so there's a magical hum of energy and then the removal of the barrel lid before he continues.]
What's wrong with a bear? I'm pretty sure we have bears around here.
1/2
[voice]
[voice]
[Yeah, it'll be an interesting project. But he bets Precis would brag that she could complete the project much faster than him. ...Hmph.]
If you want something flashy, how about some of the pets people have here? Wasn't there a dragon or something around?
[voice]
[...Hm]
[voice]
But it would be more interesting than a tiger. [...Possibly.] If it could be trained. [Again, [possibly.]
[voice]
no subject
no subject
no subject
Yeah. I would say I count.
no subject
[This whole time she just imagines him... barfighting his way through life, basically]
no subject
But if that doesn't count. What would you define as a martial artist, then?
no subject
no subject
Besides. Do you really think I started out as strong as I am? I had to work for it.
1/2
no subject
no subject
...I wasn't super-powered when I started out. I wasn't much stronger than a normal person, if you can believe it.
[And this of course, being Adell... he's obviously telling the truth.]
no subject
no subject
I fought demons. Monsters. Whatever got in my way. I shed a lot of sweat and blood. And every battle I fought I learned something, and I got tougher. Mistakes, victories... everything taught me something. Through determination and persistence I got enough experience and power just to keep getting stronger.
[Of course, part of that is the function of the world he's from. Mana power tends to grow as one fights.]
1/3
2/2 I lied
And let me guess, every time the villain beat you down you came back stronger after a minimal period of training?
1/2
...But no. I didn't get powerful by getting my ass kicked. When I lost fights, I lost fights. Didn't happen often, but I had to rest and recover, then find another way to get stronger.
2/2
no subject
[...But the scars make her wince a little]
no subject
Get more experienced. Learn how enemies fight, and figure out how to counter it and beat them the next time. ...Took me a couple of years to beat one of the people who I lost to.
1/2
[But that's like an eternity in shounen time]
2/2
no subject
...But anyway. What'd you need a martial artist for?
no subject
no subject
no subject
no subject
How many people are really gonna agree to help if they don't have any idea what you need them for?
[He actually sounds genuinely confused on this, and he's not making any effort to hide that. Because this is puzzling, though it shouldn't surprise him. It's Haruhi.]
no subject
no subject
...But at the same time, wouldn't the vagueness and just how... strange the collection of talent you're looking for make some people hesitant to speak up?
no subject

[voice]
[voice]
Well, can you get him or not, Yukito?
[voice]
[Hold please.
...
...
...
And he's back. And sounds apologetic.]
He says he isn't interested in doing "lifting."
[voice]
That's a broad job description, I can use him for other tasks. Or actually, what about you - why're you the middle man?

[ oh, marilla would faint! and she wasn't the kind of woman to faint at simply anything. ]</small.
[ voice ]
[ voice ]
[ her words are words of hesitation but her tone is one of borderline excitement. this casino idea sounds thrilling. ]
[ voice ]
[ voice ]
[ maybe this would make it okay. ] I'm sure no one could find a sin in that.
[ voice ]
[Voice]

[Voice]
Getting back on your feet, now are you? I look forward to it.
[Voice]
Yeah, you should! After all, this one is gunna top all the others!

[Voice]
[Voice]
[Voice]
That's not possible, I'm the best at getting these things together!
[Voice]
[Voice]
[Voice]
[Voice]
[It's half a matter of not wanting to use Sokka's people, and half wanting to surprise Winry with the results]

For what purpose are you recruiting such people, young lady?
no subject

[Locked]
...Yeah, good luck understanding any of what's written there. But it's obvious this guy knows his mechanics. There's also some long and obnoxious math problems scribbled into the specs as well.]
Is that proof enough, my dear?
[Locked]
Do you actually have the materials for this?
[Locked]
[And damn does he sound proud. That gun took him weeks to complete. Mainly because of the lack of fonons to actually fire the damn thing. But he's finally created something to draw then in and amplify them.]
[Locked]
[Locked]
[That's not an exaggeration. It's fact.]
If your looking for people to work for you, girl, you'd best show a bit more respect!
1/2
[...But wait, he has a point. Weird voice aside, this person does seem to be an adult. She cuts herself off, sighing]
[Locked]
[Locked]
Yes, I'm skilled in all fields when it pertains to fonic technology. It's my area of expertise, and I can create various types of machinery from assault bots to maintenance robots and smaller artifacts as well. I've done some work with lesser mechanic toys here some time ago, but with the necessarily metals and supplies, I can create a large array of machinery.
I was also the first to effectively use flightstone technology for my own use before it was even founded by other, so-called experts back on Auldrant.
[Boasting? Oh, you bet he is.]
[Locked]
[Locked]
It really depends, however, on what it is you want me to create. For now, that mechanism is only present in my small firearm, so I believe you need a different model...one that actually does the job you want. For which I'll need information on. [A pause.] As well as the reasoning for creating such machines.
[He's not backing down from that.]
[Locked]
What about an engine - a simple propeller system, like for a boat?
[Locked]
Child's play. [Many of his fonbots had propellers to fly with, and Auldrant does have small fontech motor boats.] But you didn't answer my question, child. I won't make a thing if I believe it to be unfit of someone of my esteemed status and skill. I'm not charitable with my talents, you see.
1/2
[Locked]
[...A pause] And/or a submarine, if you can pull that off.

[Suddenly, he's very worried.]
[filtered]
Flatscreen?
Oh, there's a few questions here, but she just puts up a filter. If this guy can somehow design a flatscreen, then he's probably within standards. Okay-]
You know what a pachinko machine is?
[filtered]
...Are you thinking of opening a pachinko parlor?
[filtered]
I'm going to need one of those. [Ignoring the second question] Or well, four preferably, but if you can only make one I'll settle for one.
[filtered]
And four machines? Alright. Any particular themes or payout systems you would like?
[filtered]
[filtered]
[filtered]
As for the payout systems... well the balls would be most traditional, right? [...it might conflict with everything else though] But you know what, why not make it for tokens - I don't have them yet, but aim of them being about the size of a hundred yen coin.
[filtered]
Ah-- Well, if you wish for them to be tokens instead, that is doable. I was...thinking about whether you wanted them to be kakuhen, special time kakuhen or jitan... [He pauses.] Although I suppose it doesn't matter. I will do as you ask.
[filtered]
As long as it works, I can credit you later. You're Honda, right?
[filtered]
And yes...Honda Kiku. [He's on the verge of saying "Otherwise known as Japan" but decides against it.] It is an honor.

[Sorry, Haruhi. As someone who's now spending the vast majority of her free time in the hospital waiting for a friend to wake up from a coma-like-thing which she may or may not have caused in trying to help him... she's really, really not in the mood for this kind of game.
At least her tone is more resigned than snappish.]
