godbent | 22nd: The Pumpkins of Haruhi Suzumiya

[Action]

[So things have gotten a bit chaotic in the village and... the moon doesn't look good, masks. Obviously an experiment all around. Haruhi was going to go with Leon's suggestion about carving the pumpkins with the Brigade (maybe make a contest out of it) but the fact is that in light of the current situation, that just doesn't seem to be happening. So... she collected her girlfriend, and decided to combine a nice picnic with carving out some of the pumpkins her and Leon brought to be Brigade room.

You might see them on the grass outside the square, sitting there and either eating or carving out some jack-o-lanterns. Either way, just being there together and chatting. Some of the completed pumpkins stand off to the side, either with faces or with things carved into them. They are prime to be hit up by anyone. Haruhi even has a bag she's been filling up with masks she's collected next to her.

People as a whole totally underestimate the power of a good, affectionate ribbing.

[ a shrug. this is going no where. she takes another step forward and looks more closely at the pumpkins. ] You know, you can make pumpkin pie from scratch from one of these things but I have no sweet clue how. I mean -- turning that into pie? Soft, velvety, pumpkiny pie? Magic. Gotta be magic.

[Winry sighs. She's all up for affectionate teasing! She does it to her friends all the time! But key element here? She doesn't know Giles. Or else it'd be, "Sure Buffy."]

Oh yeah! That's true... I'm not sure I know how either. It's not magic - it might be be more efficient if it was - but it might be some sort of blend...

[And now she looks thoughtful]

[ she had only meant magic in a sarcastic way, anyway. it's cool. she's used to such things flying wide of the mark. ]

Food processor. [ buffy eventually gives her verdict. ]

Actually... [Winry scoops out the final guts from her pumpkin.] You have to steam and bake the pumpkin. The insides make a puree.

[Farm girl. Yep.]

[Oh right. Of course Winry would know]

...You know how? [ huh. ] Would you -- I mean, could you teach me? Is it teachable? It's not like soufflé levels of difficult, is it?

[ she crosses her arms. ] I might've somehow managed to let Jack rope me into making a pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving, next month. And I don't even know where to start. Except for with pumpkins. And apparently steaming them.

[ as with sokka (when haruhi had been in sokka's body) buffy is lapsing back into that warm, friendliness with winry. ]

Yeah, I could teach you. It's not difficult, just a little long.

Look at that. You? You are one fortunate lady, Haruhi. Roping in an SO with baking skills.

[ the closest buffy gets to home-made treats are the days after jack gets drunk enough to rob the bakery. and 'drunk enough' in that instance actually means 'not very drunk at all'. ]

I'm sure Haruhi could do it herself if she wanted to.

Well I am a better cook! [Puffing out her chest, looking smug. but then one glance at Buffy later she relents]

-But yeah, I am. She's made me some great stuff over time. The bonus of being with a girl who knows metal work shows too.

[And she rolls up one of her sleeves to show off a bracelet Winry made for her once]

[ she lifts one crossed arm and flattens a palm against her left shoulder. she has her own handiwork gift. such things leave her feeling a little...humbled. she's never been a maker. only a breaker.

a smile. ] That's pretty good work. Better than good. Great. I didn't know you did jewellery, Win.

Only sometimes. I usually save that sort of thing for presents.

[Yeah she has no role here, so she lowers her arm and goes back to work,smiling a bit to herself]

Keeps it special, right? [ AND YET buffy is keeping her eyes unabashedly on haruhi. ] Keeps it from losing its charm -- if you only give those things to...some.

Yeah, I guess it does.

[Her face colors as she works but she's totally not giving Buffy the satisfaction of her reacting to that. Even if she agrees]

[ whaaaat is she somehow getting the drop on haruhi? oh. she is milking this one. a quick glance at winry asks plaintively for the other blonde's cooperation. ]

I mean -- you gotta consider the intent, first of all. Even before the craftsmanship.

Well, I mean... [What do you want from her, Buffy? She's not as comfortable teasing this girl as she was with Haruki.]

[GLANCE AWAY. Still a bit flushed, and now drumming her fingers. Alala. Not responding- actually why isn't Winry throwing in?]

[ you kids are too bashful and buffy is way too lacking in personal borders to not continue on, full tilt. ]

Think about it! You make something for someone? With someone in mind? That's -- that's a big deal. Jewellery, too. It says something.

Haruhi is important to me... [She scratches her neck. Erm. Awkward.]
