godbent | 30th: The Study of Haruhi Suzumiya

[Action Part 1: 15th -> 20th]

[Following her break up, Haruhi didn't tell anymore. Not explicitly. She didn't see Winry either, didn't go the Smithy, didn't go the Hughes house, and has yet to use any of the relationship cards she has left (why would she? Most of the ones she has are just inane things anyway... maybe she will in time). Instead, she just hits the books in the library hard. Studying absolutely everything she can find about magic, alchemy, or other superpowers which she hopes/wills to be learnable through effort on her part. She's even trying to practice some of the stuff she finds in there, though with limited success due to how foul her mood is.

This sets the stage for her whole week, really. Wake up, make breakfast out of habit, go the library, study obsessively, and when she can't study anymore (around the actual meeting times in the early afternoon) she goes and hangs out at the SOS-Brigade's HQ, nominally to check out how people are doing with preparations for the cultural festival. But he heart isn't really in it, not yet. She hopes it'll be there again before the day of. Anyway, from there, skip lunch, maybe go to All Passions, then back to the library until she comes home to House 10 quite late. Snack thing at about 10PM, go to sleep, repeat.]

[Action Part 2: 22nd]

[A certain voice message is what totally breaks her out of her stupor. Because frankly (and she knows unfairly) the idea of Winry going out drinking (probably celebrating her singleness with that bitch) while she's stuck with just being frustrated on her day just pisses her off. She doesn't even want to spend her day with Winry right now, which is why despite them agreeing to meet on Sundays she made absolutely no effort to run into her. ...It's not that Haruhi's stupid. She knows Winry is upset too, and she knows that the other girl won't be celebrating. But it's so much easier to be mad than it is to be miserable. It's for that reason she attempts her longest teleportation yet that that night, going all the way from the library up to the roof of House 10. And she's going to just be sitting there on the roof of House 10 all night, looking up at the sky. Trying to be right again.

It's eerily similar, to anyone who has been here long enough to remember, to Haruki's reaction to Kyonko going home, actually. She promises that this is the last night to herself. She'll be better after this. Because moping (yes, she has been moping, hasn't she) like she has been is stupid anyway.]

...it's going to get better. You know that, right?

No, I don't know that.

It will. Are you going to believe me if I keep saying that?

[...Sipping this mocha]

...I've seen proof it's going to get a little better. You just have to wait it out. Besides, you've been through breakups before, right? [Said-mocha is mediocre at best, but she's trying.]

...I never told you it was a break up.

[Setting the thermos down, she hangs her head a bit]

[...sigh. So maybe it was unfair to assume, but come on. With that night in mind, plus Winry's message.] Okay, so what is it?

Of course it's that. I just never told you.

...So what's your proof?

[Scooting closer then. Moral support and all.]

Stuff I don't really have a right to tell you, unfortunately. You've just got to trust me.

-You don't have the right to tell me?

[She goes rigid. Hint, there's a vicious note in this]

[Red alert, red alert! Okay that was a bad move. Shit. UM.] That's not what I meant!

...she feels bad, you know.

Yes, of course she does. [Still with the vicious tone. Surprisingly, it's not sarcastic] Because in her perfect world, I'm fine getting nothing.

...okay look. Before we go any further, why don't you just tell me your side of things?

She's broken up with me because of "me." And it has "nothing" to do with Ed.

[...this is Shiki. This is Shiki suddenly not happy because she's jumping to conclusions.] You're kidding. What the hell does she...why would she...what?

[...] Shiki, do you want to be married? Have kids? If so, what's the age you're thinking for it?

[Blinking. That was seemingly random.] ...I mean I've thought about it, yeah. Neku and I have sort of talked about it, but it's definitely not something I want soon. We're still technically kids, you know? I have so much more I want to do with my life before I get married and start a family. If anything, it'd be at least seven years from now. My age now, I mean. So that's...what, twenty-five I might consider getting married?

But on the other hand, I love Neku. [Mostly.] I want to be with him and take him along for the ride, but I'm not seeing marriage and babies as the end of the end. It's not the nearest goal.

...why?

[In spite of everything, in spite of all of her rage and disappointment and sorrow, Haruhi smiles a bit at that answer. She couldn't care that much about Neku, but to hear her girl agrees with her... she leans in on Shiki now]

...I said twenty-seven, actually. So it's seven years for me too.

[See, and this is why they're friends. She's not going to move for the time being save for sipping her mock-mocha.] For the same reasons as me?

More or less, yeah. [...] Winry doesn't see it that way. She's nineteen and thinks she's about to hit the "too late" point.

[...snort.] You're kidding. She...what the hell kind of logic is that? I mean I'm sure she has reasons but I can't figure out what they would be.

...so she broke up with you so that she can have all of that with someone else. That's it, isn't it?
