godbent | 31st: The Spells of Haruhi Suzumiya

[For the last 20some days, Haruhi Suzumiya has been obsessively studying. While she slowed down some after the Cultural Fair, it still was a very, very welcome distraction from thinking about how much she was hurt by that break up. Which is why she's been in and our of the library a lot. Finally though today she has decided to prop open the journal and ask for help.]

Hey, Luceti, does anyone recognize these?

[And she moves the journal to focus on:
* Helios's universe basic spellbook
* Basic Buffyverse spellbook (possibly this one or this one)
Lined up next to each other. these are the two she's had the most success with so far... she even more or less mastered one of the spells in the first one.]

Or these?

[And now it focuses on:
* Touhou Grimoire
* CLAMP universe magic tome (Western)
* CLAMP universe magic tome (Eastern)
Much less success here...]

Or this one? [She is much more unhappy sounding at this last book (a Greenhill Academy Rune textbook) because she's had basically no success even figuring out what it is talking about other than it apparently deals with mythology and magic... things.]

Or, I also found the "Writings of Aurelius" next to those first two ones, but I'm not sure if it's got spells in it or not... [it feels ominous, actually... so she figured it might, but- inside it just looks like a bunch of horoscope type things as well as just some weird old school notes]

I'm looking for people who know these books and are willing to tutor me in what's within them. I expect answers ASAP; that is all. [A pause] Also, Leon, since when do you write textbooks? [And then the camera focuses on a book written by Leon DS Geeste on Symbology]

Hmmm. Alright. Could you do anything without them?

Yeah, I'm sure I could. It'd probably look pretty unimpressive in comparison to what I do now, though.

Okay. [So they aren't necessary, but it's a highly potent focusing agent? Alright, that works...] So basically, it would be a hassle for me to actually study.

It seems to be a hit or miss skill, unfortunately. There's probably a way to ensure that a person has a certain level of skill, but that would almost definitely require specific interracial breeding or genetic engineering. [And that kind of science wasn't in his skill set.]

Yeah and to be sure I'm not going to randomly start being more Fellpool for good.

Yeah. For good. [...] But you've had luck with other magic, right?

Mmmhm! Not a huge amount, but enough to know where I need to keep studying from!

Isn't one type of magic difficult enough to learn? Why split your concentration over so many different fields?

Because none of it's native to my Earth - there's no assurance that any of these will work for me so right now I've been trying to see what does. For every one that does I'm finding at least three or four which don't, and I'll have wasted days on them. What's more, it's possible I'll be able to pick up basics from one type but not be able to do anything with more advanced forms of it... or some of the advanced forms will rely on summoning, and that of course just never works here.

[Exhale... and] ...Also Winry dumped me.

[He listens attentively as Haruhi goes into her explanation, and nods along at her different points. It's when she pauses and then confesses with this is really about that he blinks. Hard.]

I ... see. No wonder you've been hitting the books so hard. [Should he say he was sorry? Saying sorry always seemed like an awkward affair with Haruhi.]

...Yeah. Not that it's not interesting too, but. [She wouldn't have been this obsessive without it]

Not this interesting. [He eyes the books surrounding Haruhi, scratching an ear awkwardly.] Just... I don't know, don't go overboard. Not exactly a good thing to pass out on your textbooks.

Give me some credit, I'm not that bad.

I don't exactly know how long you're going to be trying to distract yourself, Haruhi. [...Awkward awkward awkward.] Anyway, sorry.

I am too. [...Exhale. She's not going to be sorry for herself. ...Much. It's okay to be a little] It makes sense though.

[His brows knit together at the latter comment.] Did she explain why or something?

Yeah. To some extent, anyway, and you can also read between the lines here and there.

So... [He trails off briefly. If Haruhi was able to say that what Winry had done made sense, it stood to reason there was a possibility Haruhi had seen this coming.] You weren't completely surprised by this.

...No, I guess I wasn't. [She bites her lip] I guess I just hoped she wouldn't lay it out like that.

Is it too personal? [Part of him is already reminding himself "This is Haruhi we're talking about here," but it wasn't like they were so close he could understand her feelings at a glance.]

No, not really. It just would sound silly to people who aren't involved... or anyone sane, really. [A hum] After all, her priorities are distorted. Archaic. She wants marriage and kids and the whole nine meters.

--Oh. Cultural differences. [He scratches his chin, his brows knitting together a little.] And it's not something she was able to get over the entire time you were dating?

I don't think people get over their dreams, Leon. Even if they're stupidly shortsighted ones. [...] If I had been able to commit to that, maybe...
