godbent | 22nd: The Pumpkins of Haruhi Suzumiya

[So things have gotten a bit chaotic in the village and... the moon doesn't look good, masks. Obviously an experiment all around. Haruhi was going to go with Leon's suggestion about carving the pumpkins with the Brigade (maybe make a contest out of it) but the fact is that in light of the current situation, that just doesn't seem to be happening. So... she collected her girlfriend, and decided to combine a nice picnic with carving out some of the pumpkins her and Leon brought to be Brigade room.

You might see them on the grass outside the square, sitting there and either eating or carving out some jack-o-lanterns. Either way, just being there together and chatting. Some of the completed pumpkins stand off to the side, either with faces or with things carved into them. They are prime to be hit up by anyone. Haruhi even has a bag she's been filling up with masks she's collected next to her.

It's called Halloween.

Technically foreign back home, but you get people asking you "oh you're from Earth?" not "oh you're from Japan"

I see. Ms. Rockbell can attest to the fact that we don't have many holidays at home, and I can't say that I've ever done much travelling beyond Amestris, so most other cultures are foreign to me.

What is it a celebration of?

Basically supernatural stuff.

Oh. That's... odd. Are all of the foreign holidays celebrations of the supernatural or is this the only one?

Well yeah. There's that Christmas one for Christ's birthday and... well there's probably one for Muhammad's somewhere or if there isn't there should be in the spirit of egalitarianism. So on and so forth. Not to mention festivals associated with other deities - Tanabata's the day Hikoboshi and Orihime can meet, after all.

Huh? No, of course not. Christ's for Christianity, of course, Muhammad's for Muslims, Tanabata's...

Us, I guess? Shinto, but the Chinese do it too, so it's folky.

[That's a relief! He doesn't think he could keep up if they celebrated everything.]

Do they celebrate a lot of them here?

[Already, he's trying to figure out where best to look for a better understanding of this myriad of holidays. Depending on what ones Luceti has, it might be good to know them so that he doesn't feel as silly as he does now, asking so many questions.]

Christmas and Valentine's are the next two holidays the Malnosso seem to make us "celebrate."

And "Halloween," I guess... but that's not quite the holiday itself.

Are those similar to this one or is this the only one that you carve pumpkins for?

This is the only one that involves pumpkins if I remember right.

Only one I know of, anyway.

What sort of rituals do the others have, then? Assuming there are any, that is...

People exchange presents on Christmas.

Plus Santa, on Christmas. You can't forget Santa.
